Qunut Duas 1 and 2: Arabic, Transliteration and Meaning

What Are the Qunut Duas?

The Qunut duas are recited in the third rak'ah of witr before bowing, according to the Hanafi school. "Qunut" means heartfelt devotion and obedience to Allah. The texts are transmitted from the companions, notably Umar (ra) (Bayhaqi, as-Sunan al-Kubra II/210-211).

Qunut 1

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنَسْتَهْدِيكَ وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ وَنُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ الْخَيْرَ كُلَّهُ نَشْكُرُكَ وَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يَفْجُرُكَ

Transliteration:

Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nastahdik. Wa nu'minu bika wa natubu ilayk. Wa natawakkalu 'alayk. Wa nuthni 'alaykal-khayra kullahu nashkuruka wa la nakfuruk. Wa nakhla'u wa natruku man yafjuruk.

Meaning:

"O Allah, we seek Your help, Your forgiveness and Your guidance. We believe in You, turn to You in repentance and rely upon You. We praise You with every good, we thank You and are not ungrateful. We abandon and forsake whoever disobeys You."

Qunut 2

اللَّهُمَّ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَلَكَ نُصَلِّي وَنَسْجُدُ وَإِلَيْكَ نَسْعَى وَنَحْفِدُ نَرْجُو رَحْمَتَكَ وَنَخْشَى عَذَابَكَ إِنَّ عَذَابَكَ بِالْكُفَّارِ مُلْحِقٌ

Transliteration:

Allahumma iyyaka na'budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjud. Wa ilayka nas'a wa nahfid. Narju rahmataka wa nakhsha 'adhabak. Inna 'adhabaka bil-kuffari mulhiq.

Meaning:

"O Allah, You alone we worship; for You alone we pray and prostrate; towards You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Surely Your punishment overtakes the disbelievers."

How Is Qunut Recited in Witr?

1. In the third rak'ah, recite Al-Fatiha and a surah.
2. Raise the hands with a takbir and fold them again.
3. Recite Qunut 1 and 2.
4. Bow and complete the prayer as usual.
