Salat al-Tunjina: Recitation, Meaning and Virtue

What Is Salat al-Tunjina?

Salat al-Tunjina is a well-known salutation (salawat) sent upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), asking for deliverance from hardship, the fulfilment of needs, and elevation in rank. It takes its name from the word "tunjina" ("deliver us") that appears within the text.

💡 Understanding it correctly: Salat al-Tunjina is not an authentic hadith text — it is a salutation composed later (commonly attributed to Imam Shadhili). Sending blessings on the Prophet is commanded directly in the Quran (Al-Ahzab 56), so reciting it earns reward. It should not be treated as a guaranteed formula — "recite it this many times and this will certainly happen" — but recited with the sincere intention of sending blessings on the Prophet.

The Salat al-Tunjina Dua

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَاةً تُنْجِينَا بِهَا مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْأَهْوَالِ وَالْآفَاتِ، وَتَقْضِي لَنَا بِهَا جَمِيعَ الْحَاجَاتِ، وَتُطَهِّرُنَا بِهَا مِنْ جَمِيعِ السَّيِّئَاتِ، وَتَرْفَعُنَا بِهَا عِنْدَكَ أَعْلَى الدَّرَجَاتِ، وَتُبَلِّغُنَا بِهَا أَقْصَى الْغَايَاتِ مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْخَيْرَاتِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ وَبَعْدَ الْمَمَاتِ

Transliteration

Allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina Muhammadin salatan tunjina biha min jami'i'l-ahwali wa'l-afat, wa taqdi lana biha jami'a'l-hajat, wa tutahhiruna biha min jami'i's-sayyi'at, wa tarfa'una biha 'indaka a'la'd-darajat, wa tuballighuna biha aqsa'l-ghayat min jami'i'l-khayrati fi'l-hayati wa ba'da'l-mamat.

Meaning

"O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad — a blessing through which You deliver us from every fear and affliction, through which You fulfil all our needs, through which You purify us from all our sins, through which You raise us to the highest ranks in Your presence, and through which You bring us to the furthest reach of every good, in this life and after death."

How and When Is It Recited?

• Recite it in a state of wudu, with calm and presence of heart.
• For a specific need, it is commonly recited 41 times, followed by dua (this number is customary, not obligatory).
• It is commonly recited often in times of hardship, fear, illness, or difficulty.
• A dhikr counter is a practical way to keep track of your count.

The Virtue of Sending Blessings on the Prophet

Allah states in the Quran:

"Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace." (Al-Ahzab 56)

The Prophet also said, "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him" (Muslim, Salat 70). Salat al-Tunjina shares in this great reward.

How many days should I recite Salat al-Tunjina?

There is no fixed number of days. Customs such as "41 times a day for 7 days" are common practice, not an obligation. What matters is sincerity and consistency, while leaving the outcome to Allah.

Is Salat al-Tunjina an innovation (bid'ah)?

Sending blessings on the Prophet is a command of the Quran, and reciting this salutation falls within that act of worship. What would be problematic is treating it as an authentic hadith, or attributing a guaranteed outcome to it. Recited with the intention of sending blessings, there is no issue with it.
