Surah Al-Alaq: Arabic, Transliteration and Translation

Surah Al-Alaq is chapter 96 of the Holy Quran; it has 19 verses and is a Meccan surah. Below you can read the whole surah verse by verse with the Arabic text, Latin transliteration and English translation.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

  1. ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ﴿1

    Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq

    1.Recite in the name of your Lord who created -

  2. خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ﴿2

    Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq

    2.Created man from a clinging substance.

  3. ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ﴿3

    Iqra wa rab bukal akram

    3.Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

  4. ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ﴿4

    Al lazee 'allama bil qalam

    4.Who taught by the pen -

  5. عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ﴿5

    'Al lamal insaana ma lam y'alam

    5.Taught man that which he knew not.

  6. كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ﴿6

    Kallaa innal insaana layatghaa

    6.No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

  7. أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ﴿7

    Ar-ra aahus taghnaa

    7.Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

  8. إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ﴿8

    Innna ilaa rabbikar ruj'aa

    8.Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

  9. أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ﴿9

    Ara-aital lazee yanhaa

    9.Have you seen the one who forbids

  10. عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ﴿10

    'Abdan iza sallaa

    10.A servant when he prays?

  11. أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ﴿11

    Ara-aita in kana 'alal hudaa

    11.Have you seen if he is upon guidance

  12. أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ﴿12

    Au amara bit taqwaa

    12.Or enjoins righteousness?

  13. أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ﴿13

    Ara-aita in kaz zaba wa ta walla

    13.Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

  14. أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ﴿14

    Alam y'alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa

    14.Does he not know that Allah sees?

  15. كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ﴿15

    Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa'am bin nasiyah

    15.No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -

  16. نَاصِيَةٍۢ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍۢ﴿16

    Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiyah

    16.A lying, sinning forelock.

  17. فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ﴿17

    Fal yad'u naadiyah

    17.Then let him call his associates;

  18. سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ﴿18

    Sanad 'uz zabaaniyah

    18.We will call the angels of Hell.

  19. كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩﴿19

    Kalla; la tuti'hu wasjud waqtarib

    19.No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
