The Dua of the Greatest Name (Ism al-A'zam): Recitation, Meaning and Virtue

What Is the Ism al-A'zam?

The Ism al-A'zam ("the Greatest Name") means "the greatest, most exalted name," and refers to the most honoured among Allah's beautiful names (Al-Asma al-Husna). Upon hearing a Companion's supplication, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"He supplicated to Allah using His Greatest Name, the name by which, when He is asked, He gives, and when He is called upon by it, He answers." (Ibn Majah, Dua 9; Abu Dawud, Salat 358)

⚠️ Understanding it correctly: The Ism al-A'zam is not "magic" or a guaranteed formula for gain. The essence of its virtue is turning to Allah through these exalted names with complete sincerity, tawhid, and presence of heart. Lawful sustenance, sincerity, patience, and righteous conduct in keeping with the dua are also among the conditions for a dua's acceptance.

1. The Best-Known Dua of the Greatest Name

Narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion recited this dua after prayer, and the Prophet remarked that he had supplicated with the Greatest Name:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ، بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ

Transliteration

Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anna laka'l-hamd, la ilaha illa anta'l-mannan, badi'a's-samawati wa'l-ard, ya dha'l-jalali wa'l-ikram, ya Hayyu ya Qayyum.

Meaning

"O Allah, I ask You, for praise belongs to You alone; there is no deity except You, the Ever-Giving, the Originator of the heavens and the earth without precedent; O Possessor of Majesty and Honour; O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all existence!"

2. The Dua of the Greatest Name Through Tawhid

In another narration, a dua pointed to as containing the Greatest Name, carrying the meaning of Surah Al-Ikhlas:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Transliteration

Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anni ash-hadu annaka anta'llahu la ilaha illa anta'l-ahadu's-samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Meaning

"O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah, there is no deity except You, the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor is born, and to whom there is no equal."

The essence of this dua is the tawhid expressed in Surah Al-Ikhlas.

3. The "Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum" Remembrance

A dhikr the Prophet recited in moments of hardship, based on the view that the Greatest Name lies within the names "al-Hayyu'l-Qayyum":

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ

Transliteration

Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith.

Meaning

"O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all existence! By Your mercy I seek help." (Tirmidhi, Da'awat 91)

Which Name Is the Ism al-A'zam? (The Scholars' Views)

Since there is no single definitive text on this question, scholars have put forward differing views:

• some say the word "Allah" itself is the Greatest Name,
• some say it is "al-Hayyu'l-Qayyum,"
• some say it is the phrase "dhu'l-jalali wa'l-ikram,"
• and some say the Greatest Name is hidden, revealing itself to those who pray with sincerity.

What is shared and certain across these views is the virtue of praying with complete tawhid and sincerity through duas that contain these exalted names.

How many times should the dua of the Greatest Name be recited?

Is every wish granted when praying through the Greatest Name?

Allah answers a dua either by granting what was asked, by warding off a harm because of it, or by storing its reward for the hereafter (Tirmidhi). Something that is not good for us may not be granted right away. Trust in Allah and the understanding that "Allah knows what is best" are essential.
