About Surah Al-Ikhlas

Surah Al-Ikhlas is the 112th chapter of the Quran and consists of only 4 verses. It was revealed during the Meccan period. Its name means "sincerity, purity, being unmixed".

This short surah summarises the belief in the oneness of Allah (tawhid) in the shortest and most profound way. For this reason the Prophet described it as "a third of the Quran".

Surah Al-Ikhlas in Arabic

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Transliteration

Bismillāhi'r-raḥmāni'r-raḥīm.

Qul huwa'llāhu aḥad. Allāhu'ṣ-ṣamad. Lam yalid wa lam yūlad. Wa lam yakun lahū kufuwan aḥad.

English Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. Say: "He is Allah, the One."
2. "Allah, the Eternal Refuge (Al-Samad — to whom all things are in need, while He is in need of nothing)."
3. "He neither begets nor is born."
4. "And there is none comparable to Him."

The Occasion of Revelation

Surah Al-Ikhlas was revealed during the Meccan period. It is narrated that the polytheists or the People of the Book asked the Prophet questions such as "What is Allah's lineage? What is He made of?" — and this surah was revealed in response. The surah establishes tawhid in the plainest form by keeping Allah's essence entirely free of any physical or human quality familiar to people. Narrations from Companions such as Ibn Abbas, Ikrimah and Qatadah in classical exegesis support this. The surah stands as a clear and direct answer both to the polytheists' idolatry and to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

The Meaning, Verse by Verse

Though only four verses, each one expresses a fundamental dimension of Islamic creed.

Verse 1

Arabic: قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Transliteration: Qul huwa'llāhu aḥad.

Meaning: "Say: He is Allah, the One."

The command "Qul" ("Say") emphasises that this statement is not a human idea but a divine truth from revelation. The word "Ahad" means more than simply "one" — it conveys a unique, indivisible, incomparable being. In Arabic, "wahid" expresses numerical oneness, while "ahad" expresses oneness in essence and quality; this distinction matters in Islamic theology.

Verse 2

Arabic: اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

Transliteration: Allāhu'ṣ-ṣamad.

Meaning: "Allah, the Eternal Refuge."

"Samad" is one of the most profound words in Arabic: it refers to the being to whom everything turns, from whom every need is met, while He Himself needs nothing. Ibn Abbas explained it as "the one who is complete within, having no void." It expresses in the fewest possible words that everything created depends on Allah, while Allah depends on nothing.

Verse 3

Arabic: لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

Transliteration: Lam yalid wa lam yūlad.

Meaning: "He neither begets nor is born."

This verse declares Allah entirely free from human relations such as fatherhood or having offspring. It directly rejects both the pre-Islamic Arab belief in "daughters of Allah" and the Christian doctrine of "the son of God." It establishes that Allah is eternal, without beginning or end, and not bound by the cycle of birth and death.

Verse 4

Arabic: وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Transliteration: Wa lam yakun lahū kufuwan aḥad.

Meaning: "And there is none comparable to Him."

"Kufu" means equal, match, or comparable. This closing verse functions as the surah's final ruling: there is no equal to Him in divine nature, nor any being on the same level. It states with finality that Allah, in His essence, attributes and actions, is beyond all comparison.

Tips for Memorising It

1. One verse a day: Memorise a verse over four days; repeat each one before the Fajr prayer and before sleeping.
2. Use it in prayer: Recite the verses you've memorised right away after Al-Fatihah in your voluntary prayers — using it fixes the memorisation.
3. Build a mental image for each meaning: Link each verse to a concrete image (for example, "refuge" for Al-Samad). Memorising with understanding lasts longer than mechanical repetition.
4. Recite it as a family: Build a habit of reciting the Three Quls together morning and evening with children; rhythm and repetition let the surah settle in naturally.
5. Reinforce by writing: Writing out a verse three times while reading it engages both visual and motor memory and speeds up memorisation.

Virtues of Surah Al-Ikhlas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) spoke of the virtues of Surah Al-Ikhlas in numerous hadiths:

1. A third of the Quran:

"By the One in whose hand is my soul, Surah Al-Ikhlas is indeed equal to a third of the Quran." — Bukhari, Tawhid, 1

2. The surah Allah loves:

A man used to repeatedly recite Surah Al-Ikhlas. When the Prophet heard of this, he said, "Allah's love has become obligatory for him, for he loved Surah Al-Ikhlas." — Tirmidhi, Fada'il al-Qur'an, 11

3. A means of forgiveness:

"Whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas 200 times a day will have 50 years of sins forgiven, provided none of it involves the rights of other people." — Tirmidhi, Thawab al-Qur'an

When to Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas

• Three times, morning and evening (together with Al-Falaq and An-Nas)
• Before sleeping (together with Ayatul Kursi)
• After every prayer (together with the tasbihat)
• On and on the eve of Fridays
• After a funeral and when visiting graves
• In times of illness (as a supplication for healing)

The Content of the Surah

In just 4 verses, the surah presents four foundational articles of faith:

1. Tawhid (the oneness of Allah):

   • "Say: He is Allah, the One."
   • There is no deity besides Allah.

2. Al-Samadiyyah (Allah's freedom from need):

   • "Allah, the Eternal Refuge."
   • Everything needs Allah; Allah needs nothing.

3. Allah has no offspring:

   • "He neither begets nor is born."
   • Allah has no son, no daughter, no parents.

4. Nothing is comparable to Allah:

   • "And there is none comparable to Him."
   • No being resembles Allah.

Reciting It with Al-Falaq and An-Nas (The Three Quls)

Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas together are known as the "Three Quls" (because each begins with "Qul..."). In the Prophet's practice:

• reciting them three times each, morning and evening
• blowing into cupped hands before sleeping and wiping the body
• reciting them in times of illness

are all narrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Surah Al-Ikhlas held in such high regard?

Because it expresses tawhid — Islam's most fundamental principle — in the clearest and most concise way. This is a surah in which Allah introduces His own essence and attributes.

Is it necessary to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas in Arabic?

Reciting it in Arabic carries greater reward but is not a strict requirement. Reciting the transliteration or memorising the meaning is also valuable. What matters most is reciting it sincerely with understanding.

Is Surah Al-Ikhlas recited in prayer?

Yes. Because of its brevity, it is frequently chosen in voluntary prayers, sunnah prayers, and some of the obligatory prayers. Reciting it in the sunnah of the Fajr prayer is considered a sunnah practice.
