About Surah Ya-Sin

Surah Ya-Sin is the 36th chapter of the Quran and consists of 83 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed during the Meccan period. It takes its name from the letters "Ya-Sin" that open the first verse.

The surah addresses the core articles of Islamic faith — tawhid (the oneness of Allah), prophethood and the afterlife — in a uniquely powerful style. Because of the depth of its themes and the force of its expression, the Prophet (peace be upon him) described it as "the heart of the Quran".

Surah Ya-Sin in Arabic (Opening Verses)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

يس وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ تَنزِيلَ الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration

Bismillāhi'r-raḥmāni'r-raḥīm.

Yā-Sīn. Wa'l-qur'āni'l-ḥakīm. Innaka lamina'l-mursalīn. ʿAlā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm. Tanzīla'l-ʿazīzi'r-raḥīm.

English Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. Ya-Sin.
2. By the wise Quran,
3. You are indeed one of the messengers,
4. Upon a straight path.
5. (This is) a revelation sent down by the Almighty, the Most Merciful.

Virtues of Surah Ya-Sin

Numerous hadiths speak of the virtues of Surah Ya-Sin. The best known are:

1. The heart of the Quran:

"Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Ya-Sin." — Tirmidhi, Fada'il al-Qur'an, 7

2. A multiplier of reward:

"Whoever recites Ya-Sin seeking Allah's pleasure will have their past sins forgiven." — Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman

3. Intercession for the deceased:

"Recite Ya-Sin over your dead." — Abu Dawud, Jana'iz, 24

When to Recite Surah Ya-Sin

Surah Ya-Sin may be recited at any time, though it is considered particularly recommended (sunnah or mustahabb) on the following occasions:

• On and on the eve of Fridays
• On blessed nights (Bara'ah, Mawlid, Ragha'ib, Mi'raj, Qadr)
• At the time of death (recited for a dying person)
• After a person's passing (after the funeral, at the graveside)
• Every night before sleeping (according to some narrations)
• After the Fajr prayer

Frequently Asked Questions

Does listening to Surah Ya-Sin count the same as reciting it?

Listening attentively is permissible and brings its own reward, but reciting it yourself carries a distinct virtue. Doing both together is ideal.

What can someone who cannot read Arabic do?

They can read the meaning in their own language, or listen to an audio recitation alongside it (for example through the Diyanet or Nurlu apps). What matters most is the intention and trying to understand the meaning.

How many times a day can Surah Ya-Sin be recited?

There is no limit. Some scholars of spirituality have recommended reciting it daily, but this recommendation is voluntary, not obligatory.
